WEMBY 1/1 PRIZM ROOKIE FETCHES A HALF MILLY 💰
Sorry, sorry — this is the second Wemby sale story in the last 3 days, and I know y’all are getting tired of it. But I’ll make it quick. Wemby’s 2023 Prizm FOTL Black Shimmer 1/1 in a PSA 9 just sold for an eye-watering $516k at PWCC yesterday.
The previous sales record for one of his cards was his 2022-23 Bowman U Best of ‘22 Autographs SuperFractor, which sold for $67k last August. The second-most (now third-most) expensive sale was for his 2023 Prizm FOTL Gold Shimmer (#1/10) in a PSA 10, which sold for $52k last week on Alt.
My take: Everyone now has the same question on their mind: how much will the Black 1/1 PSA 10 go for? Although it hasn’t been offered at public auction yet, it’s very possible that it could break the million-dollar mark based solely off this comp. If I was the owner of that card, I’d try to get it to auction ASAP.
KURT’S CARD CARE GETS THE BOOT 🥾
Card cleaning is back in the spotlight yet again, with multiple cleaned cards sent in for grading by Kurt of Kurt’s Card Care fame getting their certification numbers deactivated.
One of the cards, a Jackie Robinson with visible tape stains, was soaked to clean the stains, with the whole process actually being streamed lived on Instagram. Post-cleaning, the card was graded a PSA 2.5 and flagged as cleaned in a Twitter post by Tiffany Cards, who matched the cleaned card to its graded counterpart using visual identifiers.
PSA responded a couple days later by deactivating the certification number for the card, along with several others in the same submission batch.
The card community is pretty divided on this issue — some people are happy with PSA for taking action and upholding their grading standards, while others question how consistent the standards are if they weren’t able to detect the cleaning in the first place.
My take: I don’t think there’s anything fundamentally wrong with cleaning cards, IF you’re keeping it in your collection indefinitely. Once you choose to grade it, you should probably stick to whatever standards are outlined by the grading companies. People point to artwork as something that often cleaned/restored — and that’s true, but they also generally have strict provenance that denotes that a given piece was cleaned. If cards had that as well, I don’t think as many people would complain about cleaning.
